Managed Backup

Introduction

As modern software applications get more complex with each new release, the potential for a failure continues to increase. Modern businesses are operating 24/7 with the expectation that customers will be able to access services on their schedule. In order to maintain business continuity through even the worst disasters, businesses are employing backups to keep failsafe copies of their software applications and operating environments. All data and applications of importance require a modern backup system.

In the past, backups were intended to be long-term archival storage and audit. These systems were often very slow, requiring long periods of downtime while data was being duplicated from hard drive to slow-access tape drives. Most modern business applications don’t need the 30-year shelf life of a magnetic tape, and certainly don’t need the downtime required to perform a full backup. Speed of performing and restoring backups now trumps long retention periods in the 24/7 world of the modern internet.

The UltraServe Managed Backup Service has been designed to ensure business continuity through fast restoration. The system takes a complete copy of your software applications, operating systems and environments. The backup copy is then used as a cold-swap. In the event of an unrecoverable failure, the backup can be returned to operation ensuring your services experience only minimal downtime.

Technology

Block-level Copy The Managed Backup service performs block-level backups, which are filesystem agnostic, quicker, less resource intensive and more efficient than standard file-level backups.

Snapshots A snapshot backup captures the most accurate representation of your entire system, enabling a complete and accurate restore.

  • Virtual Machine Snapshots Virtual Machine snapshots are taken from our Enterprise Virtualisation platform. A Virtual Machine snapshot is an image of your system at that moment in time. The Virtual Machine snapshot encompasses the entirety of its data, applications, operating systems and operating environment. The UltraServe Managed Backup Service doesn’t require a software agent sitting on your Virtual Machine. Instead, backup snapshots are taken from the virtualisation layer.
  • Dedicated Machine Snapshots Dedicated Machine snapshots are taken directly from Machine’s hardware. A Dedicated Machine snapshot takes an image of the memory stores including all stored data, applications and operating systems.
